2025 marked the inaugural New Zealand Mint Coin of the Year, a new annual award recognising excellence in numismatic artistry.
Presented in association with Niue, the award celebrated outstanding achievement across the Niue effigy programme, honouring exceptional design, innovation, and technical craftsmanship. After rigorous evaluation of this year’s remarkable submissions, the official results were unveiled.

With an exceptionally strong field of entries from across our global effigy partners, selecting a single winner was no easy task. King’s Gambit rose to the top for its thoughtful concept, remarkable detailing and outstanding finish, a piece that truly pushes the boundaries of numismatic artistry.
